(a) Suggest an appropriate title to the passage.

Answer: Grandmother’s Garden.

(b) Give two examples of personification as used in the passage.

Answer: Personification is a literary device that gives human characteristics or qualities to nonhuman things or inanimate objects (animals, objects, concepts). The following are two examples of personification.

(a) ‘The peacock busily kept pace with us’. This is the first example of personification. It means that the peacock also moved forward in the same way as we did, almost walking with us. Here peacock also moved the same way as human walks and move.

(b) ‘parading its colour’, is another example of personification. which means showing it officially. The peacock fans out its tail to show its beautiful colours. Parading is also a human quality. Here this quality is attributed to the peacock’s dance.

C. Suggest a Parallel word for ‘transported’. What kind of transportation had taken place?

Answer: “Carried” is the parallel word for the word “transported”. Here transportation shows the routine of the grandmother. She transports or waters all plants from the tap. Here, the writer uses the word ‘transported’ to describe the movement of water.

(d) What is the meaning of ‘heavens’ in the passage’?

Answer: In the passage, heaven means sky.

(e) In what sense are the words ‘stirring’ and ‘parading’ used in the passage?

Answer: When we move a liquid around with a spoon, we stir it. Similarly, the water falling on the mud moves it and causes the smell associated with the mud to move across the air.
