A short note on IGNOU BEGAE- 182 English Communication Skills

BEGAE-182 English Communication Skills is a common English course for Ignou UG students that helps them to acquire competency in the four skills for communication such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Communication is the process of expressing ideas, and feelings and transferring data from one person to another and one place to another place. Without these four skills, nobody can be an effective communicator in any language including English. The whole course has divided into three blocks:
Block 1: Understanding Communication.
Block 2: Listening and Speaking in Informal and Formal Contexts.
Block 3: Reading and Writing skills.

Block 01 – Understanding Communication

Block one talks about the theoretical background of communication.
Unit 1Understanding Communication.
It introduces topics like, what is communication? sources of communication, barriers of communication, the differences between conversation and other speech events, etc.

Unit 2
We cannot live being isolated from other countries who possess different languages and cultures. Because this is the time of globalization whereas all countries consider it as a single village. In the last few years, there were drastic changes in every aspect of social life. This unit talks about how social changes shape communication, language, means of communication, and medium of communication. Apart from that it also looks at the current status of communication and language.

Unit 3 Verbal and Non-verbal Communication
This is an important unit from which you can expect more questions for your exam. This unit introduces two categories of communication as verbal and non-verbal communication. Apart from that it also looks at different barriers of communication such as semantics and linguistic barriers and socio-psychological barriers.

Block 02 – Listening and Speaking in informal and formal contexts.

Block two highlights some phrases and expressions that can be used in a formal and informal context. There are certain words, particularly for the formal context like group discussion, meeting, and presentation. At the same time, certain words can be only used in an informal context. This block helps you to distinguish or differentiate words and expressions based on formal and informal contexts.
Unit 1.
It introduces formal and informal words and expressions that can be used in interpersonal communication( communication between individuals). It discusses how to greet each other, how to introduce yourself, how to reject and accept invitations, and how to say goodbye. Apart from that, it looks at how to start small talk with other people

Unit 2

It emphasizes making inquiries and asking questions. In our day-to-day life, in many situations, we have to enquire and ask questions to get information regarding many things. This unit teaches you how to make personnel inquiries about products, services, and procedures.

Unit 3.
Unit 3 talks about group discussion and meetings. It discusses the major differences between GDs at interviews and GDs in general. Then talks about the essential components of group discussion. The second part of the unit discusses the meeting and its components like the agenda, a chairperson, the process of making discussion, etc.
Unit 4.
The last unit of block 2 where discusses presentation skills. What are the essentials of presentation skills? How to start a presentation? How to use visual aids? how to end a presentation? etc.

Block 03- Reading and Writing

Reading and writing are called secondary skills because listening and speaking are the skills that we first acquire in our lifespan. Reading and writing follow them.
Unit 1
Unit 1 talks about reading skills and discusses topics like the reading process, characteristics of reading, and the strategies used by good readers
Unit 2

This unit talks about different categories of vocabularies like active and passive. Apart from that it also looks at different grammatical categories of words like content words and functional words. After that talks about the process of word building like affixation and compounding.
Unit 3
Unit 3 gives you guidelines for improving and sharpening your writing skill. It looks at different methods of writing like how to identify a subject, how to gather information, etc. Apart from that, it emphasizes the process of writing, how to write an introduction, how to write a body paragraph and conclusion.

Unit 4
Unit four gives you some basic knowledge about the language of formal letters and it differentiates between formal and informal styles of letters.
