IGNOU follows the credit system for most of its Programmes. What is a credit system? Each Paper has pre-decided credits. Each semester, leaner has to complete 22 credits. Credit means the number of hours allotted for learning a course. One credit is equal to 30 hours. For example, each core paper has 6 credits. It means students have to spend at least 180 (6×30=180) hours learning the core papers. In IGNOU there is a fixed credit for each course. Therefore each learner has to complete the credit prescribed for each course. Whenever you opt for courses for your degree program, during the registration process, it is very important to equalize the credit that demanded the same programm.
If any learner wants to cover one credit of any course, he/she has to spend 30 hours on the same course with different activities of learning, including:
- Reading and comprehending the study material.
- Watching videos.
- Attending counseling classes.
- Writing assignment responses.
- Listening radio.
The number of credits varies based on the nature of the courses. Each UG Programme in IGNOU is comprise Four types of courses, such as:

III. Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC) | 4 credits= 4×30 | 120 Hours |

V. Generic Elective(GE). | 4 credits= 4×30 | 120 Hours |
