Answer: The river Ganga has a unique position in the cultural ethos of India. Because from immemorial time, the Ganga has been worshipped as a sacred river, and even today, many Indians considered Ganga as the holiest river. 

Answer: The river, Ganga has great importance for the Indian economy. Because 37% of India’s population is inhabited in the Ganga basin. About 47% of the total irrigated area of the country is located in the Ganga basin.

Answer: The principal sources of pollution of the Ganga are domestic and industrial wastes.

Answer: Hydroelectric dams create a dangerous impact on the river Ganga, including habitat destruction for wildlife, forced relocation of people living in the paths of dams and reservoirs, and loss of agricultural land. 

Intensive cultivation and urbanization have affected the natural life of the Ganga basin.  The river Ganga has been polluted by domestic and industrial wastes. Many cities and towns dump untreated sewage into the Ganga, and dozens of manufacturing factories dump industrial waste. As a result, in the river, there is a presence of dangerous disease-causing bacteria, as well as toxic substances such as chromium, cadmium, and arsenic.

Answer: The first step in improving the water quality would be to control the dumping of domestic and industrial waste from the numerous towns along the river’s course.

Chromium, cadmium, and arsenic are the major chemical pollutant found in the river Ganga.
