In modern political discussion, the terms state<\/em>, nation<\/em> and society<\/em> are often used together. In Western European experience, these terms are sometimes considered almost similar or coterminous. However, they are actually different concepts and must be clearly understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

i) State<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The state is a political association characterised by certain important features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Features of the State<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
  1. Territorial Jurisdiction<\/strong>
    • Every state has a definite geographical area or territory over which it exercises authority.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
    • Non-voluntary Membership<\/strong>
      • Membership in a state is more or less compulsory. People usually become members by birth or citizenship laws.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
      • Rules and Constitution<\/strong>
        • A state functions through a set of laws, rules and constitutional arrangements.<\/li>
        • These laws define the rights and duties of citizens.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
        • Legitimate Power<\/strong>
          • The state claims legitimate authority and power over its members.<\/li>
          • It has the power to maintain law and order and enforce decisions.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
          • Citizenship<\/strong>
            • A member of a state is called a citizen.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
            • State and Nationality<\/strong>
              • In many cases, the state and nationality become coterminous, meaning they overlap with each other.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                ii) Nation<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

                A nation refers to a group of people who develop solidarity and unity based on a common identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Basis of National Identity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

                A nation may be formed based on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                • common culture,<\/li>
                • religion,<\/li>
                • language,<\/li>
                • ethnic origin,<\/li>
                • shared history,<\/li>
                • traditions,<\/li>
                • or place of residence.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                  Characteristics of a Nation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
                  1. Sense of Unity<\/strong>
                    • Members of a nation feel emotionally connected.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
                    • Common Identity<\/strong>
                      • National identity helps people see themselves as belonging to one group.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
                      • Cultural Bond<\/strong>
                        • Unlike the state, a nation is mainly based on cultural and emotional ties rather than political authority.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
                        • Different Bases<\/strong>
                          • A nation may be formed through language, religion, ethnicity or historical experiences.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                            Thus, a nation is primarily a cultural and psychological community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                            iii) Society<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

                            Society is the broadest category of social organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                            Meaning of Society<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

                            Society includes a large number of social institutions, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                            • family,<\/li>
                            • kinship,<\/li>
                            • economy,<\/li>
                            • religion,<\/li>
                            • education,<\/li>
                            • and politics.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                              Characteristics of Society<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
                              1. Network of Social Relationships<\/strong>
                                • Society refers to the interlinked social relationships among people.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
                                • Interaction<\/strong>
                                  • People continuously interact with each other and form social relations.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
                                  • Institutionalization<\/strong>
                                    • Repeated and regularized social relationships gradually become institutions.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
                                    • Relational Concept<\/strong>
                                      • Society is therefore considered a relational concept based on social interactions.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
                                      • Substantial Concept<\/strong>
                                        • Society can also be viewed as a general term that may include the state or nation.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
                                        • May Overlap with State or Nation<\/strong>
                                          • Society may be coterminous with either the state or the nation, or with both.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                                            The concepts of state, nation and society are closely connected but distinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                            • The state<\/strong> is a political organisation with territory, laws and legitimate authority.<\/li>
