{"id":4866,"date":"2025-04-12T23:25:55","date_gmt":"2025-04-13T04:55:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/litradude.com\/?p=4866"},"modified":"2025-04-12T23:25:56","modified_gmt":"2025-04-13T04:55:56","slug":"outline-of-homers-the-iliad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/litradude.com\/index.php\/study-materials-for-ignou-english-courses\/begc-101\/outline-of-homers-the-iliad\/","title":{"rendered":"Outline of Homer\u2019s The Iliad"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ol><li><strong>Outline of Homer\u2019s <em>The Iliad<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><em>The Iliad<\/em><\/strong><strong> is an ancient Greek epic poem written by Homer, and it is one of the greatest works of world literature.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>The poem is set during the Trojan War, a legendary war between the Greeks (Achaeans) and the Trojans (<\/strong><strong>the ancient city of Troy<\/strong>, which was located in what is now <strong>modern-day Turkey)<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>However, it does not tell the whole story of the war\u2014it focuses mainly on a short period during the final year of the war and especially on the wrath of Achilles, the greatest Greek warrior.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> The Quarrel Between Achilles and Agamemnon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>The story begins when Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek army, takes a Trojan girl named Chryseis as a war prize.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Her father, a priest of Apollo, asks for her return, but Agamemnon refuses. As a result, Apollo sends a plague upon the Greek camp.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>To stop the plague, Agamemnon agrees to return Chryseis but demands another prize\u2014Briseis, who was the beloved of Achilles.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Achilles is furious at this insult and withdraws from the war, refusing to fight for the Greeks any longer.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>He also asks his mother, the sea-goddess Thetis, to make the Greeks suffer in battle so they will regret insulting him.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Trojans Gain the Upper Hand<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>With Achilles gone, the Greek army becomes weaker.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>The Trojans, led by Hector\u2014the noble and brave son of King Priam\u2014begin to win many battles.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>The Greeks try to get Achilles to return by offering gifts, but he refuses out of pride and anger.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Death of Patroclus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Achilles\u2019 closest friend and companion, Patroclus, is deeply concerned about the Greeks.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>He puts on Achilles\u2019 armour and goes into battle to help the Greeks, pretending to be Achilles.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Patroclus fights bravely but is eventually killed by Hector. This is a turning point in the story.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Achilles Returns to Battle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>When Achilles hears of Patroclus\u2019 death, he is filled with sorrow and rage. He decides to return to battle to take revenge.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>His mother, Thetis, gives him a new set of divine armour made by the god <\/strong><strong>Hephaestus (<\/strong>\/ h\u026a\u02c8fi\u02d0st\u0259s \/)<strong>.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Achilles enters the battlefield and kills many Trojans. In a fierce one-on-one fight, he finally kills Hector.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Then, in a cruel act of revenge, he ties Hector\u2019s body to his chariot and drags it around the walls of Troy, which shocks even the gods.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>King Priam\u2019s Plea<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>In one of the most touching moments of the poem, King Priam, Hector\u2019s father, secretly enters the Greek camp and begs Achilles to return the body of his son.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>He appeals to Achilles\u2019 sense of pity and reminds him of his own father.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Achilles is deeply moved by Priam\u2019s grief.
