This is a short and concise note anyone can follow without difficulty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>A Short Introduction to BEGAE-182<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><li>Ability enhancement course for UG students.<\/li><li>Emphasizes the development of four basic skills of communication.<ul><li>Listening.<\/li><li>Speaking.<\/li><li>Reading\u2019. <\/li><li>Writing.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">Without these four skills, nobody can be an effective communicator in any language including English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>UNIT 01 THE PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u2022<strong>Discuses the following topics:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><li>What is communication?<\/li><li>Process of communication.<\/li><li>Sources of communication.<\/li><li>Barriers of communication.<\/li><li>Differences between GD and other speech events.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>What is communication?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><li>It is a process of exchanging ideas, information, and emotions from one person to another or from one place to another place.<\/li><li>Mode of communication can be verbal or non-verbal.<ul><li>Verbal Communication- Communication without using words.<\/li><li>Non-verbal communication- Communication Without using words. Facial expressions, body language, tone, signs, symbols, etc. are also included in the communication.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4>The process of communication.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><li>It is a continuous process.<\/li><li>Communication is a Step by step action between sender and receiver or speaker and listener.<\/li><li>The following elements contributed to the process of communication such as:<ul><li>Sender.<\/li><li>Message.<\/li><li>Encoding.<\/li><li>Channel.<\/li><li>Reciever.<\/li><li>Decoding.<\/li><li>Setting.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Elements of Communication<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><li><strong>Sender or Speaker<\/strong>.<ul><li>Sender is the one who generates or produces and conveys the message to the listener or receiver.<\/li><li>Sender is the one who converts messages into codes.<\/li><li>Sender has different names: encoder, writer, and speaker.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>2. Message<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><li>message can be ideas, information, emotions, etc.<\/li><li>It is generated or produced by the speaker.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong>3. Encoding<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><li>Encoding is the process of converting ideas and information into different codes.<\/li><li>words, pictures, signs, and symbols can be codes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">4<strong>. The Channel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><li>A channel is a medium through which the message passes.<\/li><li>A channel can be a letter, telephone, Email, etc<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>5. <strong>Receiver<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><li>The receiver is the one who decodes and receives the message and gives feedback for the message.<\/li><li>The receiver has different names such as decoder and listener.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">6. <strong>Decoding<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><li>Decoding is the process of converting, words, pictures, or symbols into the form of information, ideas and emotions.<\/li><li>The receiver is the one who decodes words, images, and symbols into the information, ideas and emotion.<\/li><li>This is the reverse process of encoding.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>7. <strong>The Setting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><li>A setting is a physical and social context or situation.<\/li><li>Speaker creates and transfers information and ideas based on the context or setting.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Functions of&nbsp; Communication.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">There are seven basic functions of communication. Those are given below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><li><strong>Emotive Function:<\/strong> To express inner states and emotions:  Eg:- to express happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, etc.  <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wow! You got a perfect score on your English exam.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong>2. The Directive Function<\/strong>: To direct others to do something. Commonly found in command and request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>E.g. <strong>Close the door, please.  Don\u2019t smoke in this area.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong>3. The Phatic Function<\/strong>: To serve social Function, doesn\u2019t offer valuable information <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">Uses to start a conversation, greet someone, or say Goodbye rather than for informative function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>E.g. <strong>Hello, Hai, How are you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">4<strong>. Poetic Function<\/strong>: poetic function means Aesthetic function- it means beautifying literary works by using rhythm, rhyme scheme, alliteration, repetition, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">5. The Referential Function: It is used to give new information and To describe a situation, object, or mental situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">E.g. <strong>This is our new project, this is an expensive ca<\/strong>r.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">6<strong>. The Metalinguistic Function<\/strong>: To explain or clarify some concept of the language itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Eg:- <strong>Grammar books and dictionaries perform the metalinguistic function.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There are many barriers to communication. Let us discuss one by one<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>1. <strong>Code<\/strong>.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><li>Code means language.<\/li><li>Language can be a barrier between the addresser (speaker) and the addressee (listener).<\/li><li>The addressee may not know the language of the addresser. <\/li><li>In such a situation, communication would not be successful.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5>2. <strong>The Language Differences<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><li>Language variation also can be a barrier to communication.<\/li><li>Variations or changes in pronunciation, intonation, accent, etc. also lead to confusion between sender and receiver.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5>3. <strong>Cultural Difference<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><li>The meaning of words, signs, and symbols varies based on cultural differences.<\/li><li>As a result, communication may not be successful when two people from different cultural backgrounds talk to each other.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5>4. <strong>Unfamiliar Concepts<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><li>The unfamiliar concept also can be a barrier to effective communication.<\/li><li>Technical terms and jargon words from a particular field may not understand by all people.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5>5. <strong>Lack of Background Information<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><li>If we have sufficient background knowledge on any topic that helps us to understand very easily.<\/li><li>At the same time, if we don\u2019t have background knowledge, the topic may make any sense.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5>6. <strong>Affective factors<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><li>Affective factors are also known as personal factors<\/li><li>Anxiety, fear, attitude, lack of interest, and lack of motivation also can be communication barriers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5>7. <strong>Physical environment<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><li>Noise and other environmental disturbances and physical distance between addresser and addressee lead to poor communication.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4>TYPES OF COMMUNICATION<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Communication can be categorized into three different groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-regular\"><table class=\"has-black-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>I. Communication<\/strong>&#8211; <strong>based on the flow of information<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>III.<\/strong> <strong>Communication<\/strong>&#8211; <strong>based on the relationship<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Written, spoken,&nbsp;and&nbsp;gestural<\/td><td>Internal&nbsp;and&nbsp;external<\/td><td>Formal&nbsp;and&nbsp;informal&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5>I.
